Everyone has fears. Fears of failure. The fear of speaking in front of a crowd. Fears of animals, snakes, spiders. There are strange phobias such Coulrophobia (fear of clowns) or Neophobia (fear of newness). The lists of phobias seem to be never ending. Fear is a real issue in our lives.I was recently reading a blog that discussed the fears that we are born with. Psychologist believe we are only born with two. 1. The fear of falling. 2. The fear of loud noises.
Two fears that most never take issue with, except when doing that crazy team building exercise where you fall backwards into your group’s arms.
After reading this blog I saw on my blog reader a Leadership Coaching Video from Mark Driscoll on the #1 command in the Bible which is: “Do not Fear”.
If physiologists are right then it’s no coincidence God wants us to be reminded consistently throughout His word we have no reason to fear. (I Don’t get the link between phys and God?)
This command is the most famous of all commands found in the Bible. It’s present in 366 verses. One for every day… a reminder we all need.
Verses like:Isaiah 43 1 But now, O Jacob, listen to the LORD who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. 2 When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD, your God, 2 Timothy 1:7 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Everyday we wake up with fears crippling our present and restricting our future. Fears that God has given us the power to overcome. Fears that have no place in our lives.
Whether it’s the fear of sharing our faith, standing in front of a crowd, or striving to reach our God given potential – we have not been given the spirit of FEAR. The only person we need to fear is God Himself and He is on our side.
This is our chance to deliver ourselves from the pain of our past and the fear of the future. The power of the cross removes any fear we have allowed to restrict us forever.
Today is a new day. A day of new refreshing and not old fears….
