Last night at Verge we began our journey towards Christmas with our newest series RHYTHM. If you were not there then you missed out on the opportunity to be apart of our decision as a group to experience the Christmas Season different this year. We are beginning by reassembling our schedules and routines, so we can focus more on God and others instead of ourselves.
Our goal is simply to look for fulfillment in lives (God and others), not lies (gifts), this Christmas Season. Looking for fulfillment in places that offer true Hope, not false Hope.
Last night we discussed the angel appearing to Mary in Luke 1. Go back and re-read the story so that you can better understand the heart of Mary and what it means to live a life of “let it be…”. To always want God’s will in our life, not our own; to believe His plans are bigger than our own.
Read: Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6-7, Micah 5:2-5, Isaiah 11:1-10
Think: Throughout the Old Testament the people of Israel found themselves in the captivity of foreign nations. These nations were power-hungry, evil men who used the Israelites as slaves. Last night I mentioned to you the Israelites were not expecting a baby, but a warrior. They were looking for someone in armor, not in a diaper. Why? Because they were looking for a Savior from their enslavement. Throughout the Old Testament we see prophecy after prophecy about the future Messiah. Those prophecies came from prophets who always shared about God sending them a Messiah in the future who would be their Savior…. They placed their hope in this future Messiah…This Messiah was Jesus and Jesus still brings us hope to this day…
Live: Right now think about ways you can live out God’s hope. When Caley and I first got married and moved away to college it took a while for us to find a job that worked with our school/church schedules. There were many times we didn’t know how we were going to pay our bills or buy groceries. Where was our HOPE directed to? To God and God alone….And He provided and took care of us… He allowed for our groceries to be paid for with wedding Walmart gift cards until the day we got jobs. Not only did He provide us jobs, He provided us jobs in a company that is completely Christian based and owned by a Student Pastor like myself.
Have you ever had a time where you needed something really bad in your life? You had a massive need or issue that only God could take care of? What HOPE did you have in that moment? Did you have HOPE that God would answer your request or was your hope in your abilities?
Pray: As you pray don’t forget every time you see a Nativity Scene the next 4 weeks to remind yourself of our goal this season. To have a heart of “let it be”. We may not understand why things are the way they are, we may not understand what God is doing right now in our lives, but we want HIS will not OURS. Pray today that you can take the HOPE of God and make it personal. Pray to God asking that He would help you look to him in the midst of life’s trials and tribulations.
